ME-02 & Sen: Council For A Livable Doubles Down For Two Big Democratic Victories

Received this e-mail today from the Council for a Livable World:

As we all deal with the deadly coronavirus, we cannot forget that there are important elections underway. Two of the hottest congressional races this year are in Maine, one for the House and one for the Senate.

Add to these two contests a bid by President Trump to capture an electoral vote in Maine’s second district — as he did in in 2016 — and the Pine Tree state will have a full share of close races.

House race: Rep. Jared Golden (D) won a major upset in 2018 against a Republican incumbent where the results were not known for days after the election. Golden squeaked in with 50.5% of the vote. Trump won the district 51-41% in 2016, so with him at the top of the ticket, Golden’s race is a definite toss-up.

Golden, who enlisted as an infantryman in the Marines and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, has voted against building a new, low-yield nuclear weapon, as well as new medium-range missiles, and for prohibiting U.S. military action against Iran without prior congressional approval.

Senate race: Sara Gideon (D), the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, is in a close contest against Sen. Susan Collins, who is now one of the most unpopular Senators in the country. Polls show the candidates tied, a great position for a challenger to be in. Gideon will be a strong supporter of arms control in the Senate.

Please consider helping both candidates generously. We can then hope that as Maine goes, so goes the nation.

Thank you for your continued interest in these elections in the face of the coronavirus we all face, and stay well.

Sincerely,

John Tierney
Executive Director
Council for a Livable World
Member of Congress, 1997
