These new crisis-management poll numbers are just awful for Trump

For anyone who thought the Teflon Don could just bluster and gaslight his way through the election season and beyond, the latest Quinnipiac poll should be eye-opening.

Not only do Americans think Trump is bad in a crisis (duh), they also show a lot more confidence in his likely Democratic opponent, Joe Biden.

The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent:

A new Quinnipiac poll finds that Trump’s numbers are pretty awful. Only 43 percent of registered voters nationwide approve of Trump’s handling of coronavirus, while 49 percent disapprove.

Among key voter groups that Trump needs to win back, those numbers are worse. Only 37 percent of independents approve of his handling of coronavirus, versus 50 percent who disapprove. Among college-educated whites, those numbers are 43 percent and 51 percent. Among suburban voters, they’re 40 percent and 54 percent. Among women, an abysmal 36 percent approve and 55 percent disapprove.

Meanwhile, the poll also finds that registered voters say by 56 percent to 40 percent that former vice president Joe Biden — the most likely Democratic nominee — would do a better job than Trump handling a crisis. Among college-educated whites, that’s 54 percent to 42 percent. Among independents, it’s 59 percent to 33 percent; and among women, it’s 63 percent to 32 percent.

People tend to forget how popular George W. Bush was — despite mountains of evidence demonstrating he was a callow dumbass — before the Iraq war went south and Katrina ripped the thin veil of respectability off his presidency. Somehow, Bush managed to win reelection, despite a cavalcade of stupid and evil decisions. Trump has never actually been popular, except with the red-state hoard he needs to eke out another Electoral College victory.

Will we finally see his floor of support drop out from under him as this crisis continues to unfold?

Unless Trump miraculously becomes competent and compassionate sometime in the next week (which is about as likely as Kirk Cameron mapping the human genome on a Denny’s kids’ placemat), these numbers are only likely to get worse.

And that could finally be the end for Dumb Donald.
