MoveOn Members Endorse 13 Diverse, New Progressive Leaders in First Wave of Endorsements to Take Back the House

Members praised the endorsed candidates for vowing to protect healthcare and create economic opportunity

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, MoveOn Political Action is announcing the first wave of federal endorsements made by its members as part of an effort to take back the House of Representatives this November.

Each of the candidates is currently fighting for progressive values like universal healthcare and access to equal opportunity in their communities. MoveOn members plan to make nearly 100 federal endorsements in the 2018 midterm election cycle to end GOP control of the House.

Specifically, MoveOn members in their respective districts voted to endorse:

  • Colin Allred (TX-32). A civil rights attorney and Dallas native who is running to stand up for everyone in the community, not just special interests who have rigged the system.
  • Kara Eastman (NE-2). A trained social worker who is ready to roll up her sleeves and work for children, families, and all of those in need.
  • Andy Kim (NJ-3). A south Jersey native, Rhodes Scholar, and national security expert. He’s ready to serve the people, not corporations.
  • Jess King (PA-11). A working mom, small business champion, and a leader in local economic development. She’s running to make sure everyone can make ends meet.
  • Amy McGrath (KY-06). A mom, Marine combat fighter pilot veteran, and Kentucky native. She’s not afraid to speak truth to power and is committed to serving this country.
  • Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23). Has served our country in Iraq, in the civil service, and is ready to serve in Congress.
  • Aftab Pureval (OH-1). Has fought for the workers in his office and the constituents he serves as the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts. He’s ready to bring these same values to Washington.
  • Betsy Rader (OH-14). Has worked tirelessly as a civil rights lawyer advocating for equality in the workplace, representing abused children, and sitting on the Board of Cleveland Legal Aid.
  • Hiral Tipirneni (AZ-08). Came to America as a three year old and has served as an emergency room doctor for more than 20 years and now leads a team in cancer research.
  • Xochitl Torres Small (NM-2). A New Mexico native who has served the community working in Sen. Udall’s district office, as a water protection lawyer protecting our land, and is ready to serve in Congress.
  • Lauren Underwood (IL-14). Has first hand experience in the healthcare system as a patient with a preexisting condition, nurse, and public servant. She’ll work to broaden access to care for everyone.
  • Liz Watson (IN-9). Has been a champion for workers rights and giving everyone the opportunity to succeed. As a lawyer and an advocate, she’ll continue to fight for everyone in Congress.
  • Susan Wild (PA-7). A community advocate, mother of two, and fighter for the working class.

“These thirteen new progressive leaders are firing up MoveOn members in their districts like never before,” said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn Political Action. “All of them are running strong campaigns and committed to fighting for progressive values in Washington, such as health care for all, protections for dreamers and an economy that works for everyone instead of a wealthy few. MoveOn members support these candidates and plan on showing up for them at the ballot box this November.”

This year, MoveOn members are leading a Resist & Win initiative, a national election program dedicated to moving more voters to the ballot box. Organizers from around the nation will mobilize and train grassroots activists, shape the progressive narrative, and fundraise directly for like minded political champions.

MoveOn Political Action represents the collective will of MoveOn’s members by helping to elect progressive candidates. In the 2014 election cycle, MoveOn members made over 6.7 million phone calls for endorsed candidates. MoveOn members have also raised more than $2 million, mobilized volunteers, and run ads in support of endorsed candidates across the country.
