“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett was attacked during early Tuesday morning hours by two assailants who were “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs,” according to Chicago police, who are considering the attack a possible hate crime—as reported by numerous news sources. This is just one of countless anti-LGBTQIA+ attacks that range from “jokes” to unjust dismissals to violent assault.
PDA is fighting for social and economic justice for all. LGBTQIA+ Americans are threatened by unjust firings, evictions, and other discrimination without any legal recourse. Even worse: In 2018, the Trump administration rolled back already-limited protections and introduced harmful policies that further marginalized vulnerable populations nationwide. Action is overdue. Please click here to sign the petition to tell Congress to protect LGBTQIA+ Americans now.
LGBTQIA+ Americans face discrimination at work, in housing, at adoption and health care agencies, and even in the businesses they may patronize. No current federal law bars discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The straw man argument of “religious liberty” is increasingly being used as a pretext to license discrimination against some 11 million Americans who identify as LGBTQIA+.
In the past two years, the Trump administration and an increasingly conservative federal court system have rolled back limited protections offered at state and local levels, and promulgated harmful policies that further marginalize this vulnerable population.
Sexual orientation and gender identity are privacy issues that deserve respect and civil rights protection. Now is the time to demand that Congress enact laws protecting LGBTQIA+ Americans now!
