YouTube suspends OANN for violating COVID misinformation policy

2 min read

OANN is Donald Trump’s new favorite teevee network, and that makes a ton of sense — because it’s basically Fox News on bath salts, chewing away at America’s jowly face until we’re all too confused and exasperated to fight back.

Its White House reporter, Chanel Rion, has tossed Trump a fusillade of Wiffle balls over the past several months, but this is my favorite: “Mr. President, do you consider the term ‘Chinese food’ to be racist because it is food that originated from China?”

Needless to say, it’s a conflict of interest for a reporter to work in the White House press corps while living in the pr*sident’s colon. But then OANN isn’t much for journalistic ethics.

And guess who’s noticed. YouTube!

NBC News:

YouTube suspended the right-leaning One America News Network for one week on Tuesday after it posted a video that contained coronavirus misinformation.

YouTube removed the video for violating a policy prohibiting the posting of content that spreads coronavirus misinformation. The one that One America News Network, or OANN, posted contained claims of a guaranteed cure for the disease.

Because of the suspension, OANN will be blocked from posting content for a week and will be dropped indefinitely from the YouTube Partner Program, which gives users an opportunity to monetize their content.

“Since early in this pandemic, we’ve worked to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation associated with Covid-19 on YouTube,” said YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi. “Due to repeated violations of our Covid-19 misinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we've suspended the channel from the YouTube Partner Program and as a result, its monetization on YouTube.”

You mean there are consequences to spreading unhinged conspiracy theories? Could have fooled me.
