Democratic Debates Must Address Poverty and Climate

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is changing politics in America, and we’re changing the presidential debates. These debates offer a unique opportunity letting voters evaluate candidates’ commitment to solving the most critical issues. That process cannot provide the answers we need unless the debates focus on the most daunting challenges we face.

This past week, PDA earned recognition for our leadership on addressing the Climate Emergency, and launched an effort to address the preventable crises of poverty, hunger, and homelessness.Click Here to sign the petition demanding questions focusing on ending poverty in the debates.

In a major disappointment, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) voted against holding a Presidential Debate on the climate. But we’re not giving up. We’re planning a huge intergenerational climate lobby and stepping up our comprehensive coalition efforts to address the Climate Emergency. Join PDA Demanding a Debate on the Climate Emergency

Sustain PDA’s Climate Organizing With Monthly Gifts

The Guardian reports: “Last week, Progressive Democrats of America circulated an open letter to the DNC chair, Tom Perez, calling for a climate debate, signed by environmental group leaders and activists alongside party members. But DNC leadership has held fast to its position against ‘single issue” debates.’”

We will not be deterred because every day that passes makes our leadership that much more important! The Amazon Rainforest—a natural treasure often referred to as “the planet’s lungs” because of its critical role in producing oxygen—is ablaze. This catastrophe presents horrendous ramifications for the global environment and especially the Climate Emergency.

Common Dreams reports: “As activists sustain pressure on the DNC Saturday to vote on favor of a climate debate, advocacy group Progressive Democrats of America said that three presidential candidates added their names to an open letter to the committee demanding such a single-focused debate.”

The report continues, “Welcoming the signatures from Tom Steyer, Tulsi Gabbard, and Marianne Williamson, PDA executive director Alan Minsky said, ‘The Democratic Party needs to show it is ready to respond to the existential climate threat by delivering the American people a televised climate debate.’”

Tragically, human beings are rushing headlong toward extinction. We have no time to waste. The scientific consensus is clear. We have about eight years to halve our global CO2 emissions. Please help us continue and intensify our mobilizing. Click Here to support PDA’s Climate Emergency Fund.

PDA is also mobilizing for Medicare For All (MFA). Our coalition is working to add more cosponsors, and we need as many cosponsors as we can get! Call Congress at 202-858-1717 and Click Hereto tell your Representative to Cosponsor Rep. Jayapal’s and Rep. Debbie Dingell’s Medicare For All Act. Then, Click Here to tell your Senators to cosponsor Bernie’s MFA legislation.

Join PDA demanding accountability for Trump. We’ve had terrible presidents before, but Trump violates even the lowest possible standards. His racist attacks on members of Congress, hateful rants against immigrants, reckless threats, and rank dishonesty all raise concerns about his fitness for office. Join PDA supporting congressional hearings. Click Here to send an email to your Representative now.

Keep up the pressure for Justice Or Bust by condemning Trump’s inhumane, punitive, and bigoted border policies that only cause human suffering—and we continue to condemn the generations of exploitative imperialist policies that caused and continue to exacerbate the crisis. Please Click Hereto contact your Senators and Representative to demand Congress hold hearings to end and reverse failed neocolonialist policies.

The Student Debt Crisis looms as a dark cloud over our economy. PDA Executive Director Alan Minsky reports, “Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ilhan Omar introduced legislation to cancel all outstanding student debt; their bills compliment parallel legislation that would make all public state and community colleges tuition free.”

Alan explains, ”If passed, these bills would solve a massive crisis that has been suffocating the American economy and burdening the lives of 45 million working and middle class Americans.” Click Here to sign on as a grassroots cosponsor of the Student Debt Cancellation legislation.

We appreciate all you do to help make progress on these and other issues. If you’ve never donated to PDA before, now is the perfect time. We need your support now more than ever. Click Here to support PDA’s issue organizing.
