So we all know he’s an idiot:
In an interview with KVUE on Tuesday, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said he supports the reopening of schools amid the coronavirus pandemic, but it's important to make sure students feel safe in classrooms.“I think starting slowly with online learning, but then maybe transitioning for some students to come back on campus using the same sort of safeguards that we're all now using,” Cornyn said. “Masks, hand washing, social distancing, plexiglass barriers like we've seen in some of the stores and things like that. Those are the sorts of things that let us adapt to this virus. It's not going to go away.”
Cornyn added that the decision to resume in-person learning should be decided by local school districts and said he thinks starting out online and eventually transitioning to in-person learning is a good idea, especially because of how many children are having a difficult time learning from home.
He even put out a campaign ad bragging out this:
But Salon points out that that’s not a real Texas school in the ad:
The classroom footage uses stock content from Estonian company Gorodenkoff Video Productions, which sometimes films in its own studios on sets it designs and builds. The company's website reads:
Gorodenkoff Video Productions is a team of Stock Content Creators united in one studio. Our company is based in Estonia, small European country that's renowned for its love for technology and all things digital, so are we. We gathered a team of like-minded professionals; people with inexhaustible imagination, and desire to create new stories, situations, and narratives that can be used by our dear customers all over the world.
Sometimes we think that the real world is not enough so we build our own sets, so we can shoot familiar surroundings but look at them from a different, more interesting angle.
Estonia has as about one-third as many COVID-19 cases in total as there were new cases in Texas only yesterday, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. Adjusted for population, Estonia has about 14% the total COVID-19 death rate as Texas.
When asked about the safety of Texas students and teachers returning to classrooms, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) appeared to question whether children can catch and transmit the new coronavirus, but data provided by doctors and government websites contradict his statement.
We still don’t know whether children can get it and transmit it to others,” Cornyn said in an interview Thursday with NBC 5.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, more than 1,700 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in people ages 0-19 statewide. More than 500 of those patients are under the age of 10.
We really need to get rid of this idiot with a badass Patriot named MJ Hegar (D. TX), who wasted no time hitting Cornyn on this.
The Democratic candidate for Texas’ other Senate seat is veteran M.J. Hegar. She told KERA she would vote for the Military Justice Improvement Act.
The vast majority of people in the military are dedicated public servants, Hegar said, but commanders shouldn’t oversee criminal allegations like sexual assault.
“The people in the chain of command are good at executing the mission,” she said. “They’re not necessarily the people who should be making decisions about whether or not there’s enough evidence to prosecute someone for sexual assault.”
