Back in 1992, Pat Buchanan primaried incumbent President George H.W. Bush because, apparently, Bush wasn’t nearly racist enough. You may remember Buchanan. He was a nativist, xenophobic tub of nut butters who campaigned on a platform of fear and scapegoating. Thank God the GOP had too much sense to ever allow a guy like that to gain any traction. Can you imagine?
Anyway, back when the Republican Party still had a tiny modicum of pride, dignity, and sanity, then-attorney general William Barr, who is now Trump’s AG nominee, literally laughed at the idea of putting a 2,000-mile barrier along the entire length of the U.S.-Mexico border.
And his explanation for thinking it was a stupid idea made a lot of sense.
Here he was during a PBS interview with Jim Lehrer when asked about Buchanan’s racist, impractical, and utterly bonkers idea:
“I don’t think it’s necessary; I think that’s overkill to put a barrier from one side of the border to the other. In fact, the problem with illegal immigration across the border is really confined to major metropolitan areas. Illegal immigrants do not cross in the middle of the desert and walk hundreds of miles to the nearest city. They generally try to go up to certain specified routes, and in fact we’re only talking about a 200-mile area where there’s appreciable crossings, illegal crossings. And in fact 40 to 50 percent of the illegal crossings in the United States occur on a 14-mile stretch south of San Diego.”

Now, of course, Barr will be tasked with crafting workable public policy out of whatever frothing flying monkey comes barreling out of Trump’s diseased head at any given moment.
The GOP hasn’t been a great institution in a long, long time, but since Trump blundered onto the scene it’s thrown all sense of decorum out the window and started drinking directly from the toilet.
And I have a feeling it will never again return to polite society.
