Trump tried to dog-whistle the lost cause for his base during an interview with Fox News last week. There are not fine people on “both sides”.

  • But something else that matters is that in the 60s destructive urban riots were a real thing, and there really was a crime wave. Now, by contrast, it's all fantasy and conspiracy theories: antifa terrorists are imaginary, BLM demos have been overwhelmingly peaceful 2/
  • There are people who get their vision of the world from Tucker Carlson, and believe the nonsense; but they were solid Trump supporters to begin with. Law and order rhetoric based on lurid fantasies isn't going to persuade anyone 3/
  • At this point Trump is hoping that we won't believe in what's actually killing Americans, and focus on what isn't. It doesn't seem to be working 4/
