As we watch Rudy Giuliani’s last marble circle the sanitarium shower drain where they hose down the real hard-luck patients, it’s important to note that his lurid side show is just that — a bad-faith effort to convince idiots that there’s actually something to Donald Trump’s protracted loser tantrum.

But it’s a farce. And as alarming as it is to see a report that Donald Trump has invited Michigan state legislators to the White House to join him for some whine, cheese, and ham-handed treason, it’s really not that surprising. Trump has lost, he knows it, he’s desperate, and he will burn down our democracy to get his way — if he can corrupt enough fellow Americans, that is.

But don’t take my word for it. This fascistic strategy — which should by now be apparent to everyone with eyes — has been confirmed by Trump’s own campaign.

Reuters:

President Donald Trump’s strategy for retaining power despite losing the U.S. election is focused increasingly on persuading Republican legislators to intervene on his behalf in battleground states Democrat Joe Biden won, three people familiar with the effort said.

Having so far faced a string of losses in legal cases challenging the Nov. 3 results, Trump’s lawyers are seeking to enlist fellow Republicans who control legislatures in Michigan and Pennsylvania, which went for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020, the sources said.

So this is kind of like losing the Super Bowl and then calling the commissioner to convince him to send the Lombardi Trophy to your office and declare you the winner after the fact. In other words, Donald Trump is trying to break democracy so he doesn’t have to face the music symphony cacophony.

Trump’s lawyers are seeking to take the power of appointing electors away from the governors and secretaries of state and give it to friendly state lawmakers from his party, saying the U.S. Constitution gives legislatures the ultimate authority.

A person familiar with the campaign’s legal strategy said it has become a “more targeted approach towards getting the legislators engaged.”

So just for the sake of argument, imagine this worked. Would other countries recognize Trump as the legitimate head of state? Would most Americans? Of course not. It would lead to a shitshow of historic proportions, and for what? To protect the fee-fees of a guy who clearly has no interest in doing the job he’s cheating his ass off in order to keep.

Joe Biden will become president on January 20. I have no serious doubt about that. But Jesus Christ, Trump is taking a sledgehammer to our country. If he doesn’t actually break it, it will be thanks to our own resolve and little else.

I never thought I’d live to see this moment, but here we are — pulling our democracy back from the brink with little room to spare.
