Triggered Trump storms out of 60 Minutes interview as victory odds decrease

“Trump's odds of victory will decrease rather quickly, absent a sharp increase in his poll numbers.”

Trends will out, and then there’s this bit of unhingery, as Trump bails on a 60 Minutes interview, because reasons… Likely Lesley Stahl asked more than a few uncomfortable questions.

This recalls his historic comments to Stahl many years ago about attacking the press: “I do it to discredit you all & demean you all so when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe you.”

Convergence is happening, and there’s more baking in of numbers in early-voting data, especially with the differences between D & R tallies, a reduced 3rd party vote, and the loss of seniors for Trump. And there’s that continuing unwinding of Trump, that probably won’t change after Thursday’s debate, at which Trump will be lucky to get a draw.

President Donald Trump reportedly walked out of his interview with 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl on Tuesday, according to CNN White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins. “Apparently there was some drama while President Trump was taping his 60 Minutes interview today,” Collins tweeted, adding that the president “abruptly ended his solo interview after around 45 minutes” and “did not return for a scheduled walk & talk he was supposed to tape” with Vice President Mike Pence.

Shortly after the interview, the president apparently tried to create a diversion by tweeting a six-second clip of Stahl “not wearing a mask in the White House after her interview with me,” adding, “Much more to come.” Like Trump, Stahl was hospitalized with COVID-19 earlier in the pandemic.

Chekhov's gun is a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. Elements should not appear to make “false promises” by never coming into play.

“(T)he image from the (Trump) tweet shows Stahl with her producers immediately after Trump ended the interview. Stahl had not yet gone back to get her personal belongings to put her mask back on”

Sadly it isn’t the first time he’s done this, including the preemptive tweet to shift the media frame from whatever gaffe he made during the interview.

This year’s general election follows high turnout in the primaries, including in battlegrounds such as Wisconsin, despite many races being held after the presidential candidates were decided and during the pandemic. And it comes two years after 2018 shattered turnout records for a midterm.

The critical question for Democrats is whether these 2020 early ballots are additional voters or just people who would have voted on Election Day anyway.

No one’s going to change those approval numbers with two weeks left.

While the vast majority of voters have already made up their minds, Americans could benefit from an orderly debate. (Each candidate will be muted when the other is delivering his two-minute answer on a topic, an effort to prevent a repeat of President Trump’s disruptions that made the first debate practically unwatchable.) Here is a sampling of what Trump should be asked on each of the new topics (I’ll do questions for former vice president Joe Biden on Wednesday):

Leadership:

  • Did you set a good example for America’s children by paying off women with whom you allegedly had extramarital affairs?
  • When you personally insult and attack political opponents on Twitter, do you diminish respect for the office you hold?
  • Why do you so often dismiss “blue states” and “blue cities”? Don’t you have a responsibility to look after all Americans regardless of how they voted?
  • Why do you incite hatred against Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), including by supporting chants at one of your recent rallies to “lock her up”? After law enforcement foiled an alleged plot to kidnap Whitmer, isn’t this dangerous?
  • Why do you think so many military leaders and former national security officials have spoken out against your reelection?
  • Do you want your voters who cannot get to the polls or fear getting sick to vote by mail? Will their votes be legitimate? There is no evidence of widespread fraud in U.S. elections, so why do you continue to claim otherwise?
  • Do you bear responsibility for the White House event that appears to have been a covid-19 superspreader event? Why have you prevented your doctors from giving a full accounting of your health?

Trump’s now in Erie PA, at the airport, doing more rally shtick, making a sideways comment about Lesley Stahl amidst the usual stump speech lies, emphasizing fracking etc.
