Military-style direct action to disrupt legal elections was the operational frame for a deluded Trumpist vanguard on 1/6. Like Venezuela’s last coup attempt, the insurrectionists hoped that there would be more military and police support, but even Trump couldn’t even commit to his speech promise to march to the Capitol, much less stop the certification vote and declare martial law.
It’s weird to think that Orange Blob was worth the same techniques used to steal elections and impose US control from decades of foreign intervention. Democracy would be the last thing on the helicopter out of Saigon.
America was lucky the Trumpists weren’t better organized and the regular military declared that their oath was to the Constitution and not El Blobbo the Great.
JUST IN: Prosecutors revealed comms between top Oath Keepers this morning that show evidence they coordinated tactics with the Proud Boys and other militia groups in advance of Jan. 5-6 activities.
Oath Keepers were convinced Trump was going to invoke the Insurrection Act, which they viewed as permission to stop counting of electoral votes.
Important caveat: Oath Keepers have admitted to preparing for violence in the event they encountered antifa, not for storming the Capitol — and some of these comms suggest that was their consideration. More keeps emerging though…
The insurrectionists hoped they’d be welcomed as ‘liberators’ over 100 GOP members agreed even as they surrendered the Capitol temporarily.
