The Persecution of the Inmates of Congress Under the Direction of the Marquis de Trump

3 min read

IANAPs, so I can’t say if or how sadism is associated with narcissism, even the malignant kind. But Trump sure presents as embodying both conditions.

President-elect Joe Biden on Saturday slammed Trump for refusing to sign the agreement into law.
“It is the day after Christmas, and millions of families don’t know if they’ll be able to make ends meet because of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign an economic relief bill approved by Congress with an overwhelming and bipartisan majority,” Biden said in a statement. “This abdication of responsibility has devastating consequences.”
And even some people close to the White House say Trump’s decision to hold up the deal reflects his embittered mood in the final days of his presidency.
“He’s just angry at everybody and wants to inflict as much pain on Congress as possible,” one person briefed by White House officials on the matter said. [emphasis added]…

There’s a whole bunch of psychological sh!t going on here: petulance, temper tantrums, wilful denial of reality, megalomania, and of course malignant narcissism. But I have an idea that Trump is torturing his party, the Congress, and the country not just because he isn’t getting his candy but because he enjoys torturing his party, the Congress, and the country.

He’s a sadist.

Well, we all knew that already, with his dragging terrified infants out of their parents’ arms and locking them up in inhumane conditions, with the recent spate of executions, with his deliberate spreading of the coronavirus, with the way he makes governors and mayors beg for his help and then says no. Long before he ran for president, he was stiffing contractors and bankrupting them — partly for the money, but also because he got his kicks from screwing them.

So when he throws Congress and his own Treasury Secretary for a loop by demanding changes after the last minute, he’s not doing it for some tactical advantage — there isn’t any — and most likely not because he really thinks this will get Congress to hand him the election (they can’t, and some part of him knows it). He’s doing it because he is in pain, and if he’s hurting, then goddammit, everybody else needs to suffer.

Since Trump is his own worst enemy (as well as everyone’s), there is some chance that this latest sadistic stunt will backfire on him. This time, his actions aren’t “owning the libs” or “making the politicians squirm” or any of the other nonsense his base likes him for.  This time, he is hurting the people who supported him and believe in him.

So, one of the necessary steps to recovering the US from the miasma of Trump is to hammer him on this, to say over and over that the base’s misery is Trump’s fault, that they are suffering because of him. We can’t survive another sadist in the Oval Office.
