The 74-year-old current President of the United States, Donald Trump, has been telling us for days and affirmed by his Vice President, and COVID-19 task force leader Mike Pence, that testing is “generating” more coronavirus cases. I used a thesaurus to find words that can be substituted for generating. The top three are: producing, creating, and making. Testing does not do any of those things, it only detects the virus. That is like saying about one of my sons, who are both fathers, had they just not allowed their wives to pee on a test strip they would be richer and their wives would have avoided a lot of birthing pain. Yes, it is an illogical analogy because it comes from an illogical premise. Although you may smile at Trump’s ignorance the mirth quickly dissipates when you realize that 124,509 Americans are dead as of noon today. A large portion of the deaths are a result of the mishandling of the crisis by Mr. Trump
In contrast, presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden led the Ebola virus task force under the Obama administration. In 2014 former President Obama named Ron Klain as his “Ebola Czar.” Mr. Trump, of course, sent out a tweet, “ Obama just appointed an Ebola Czar with zero experience in the medical area and zero experience in infectious disease control. A TOTAL JOKE!.” The death toll due to the Ebola virus, under Klain’s direction, was two. The man [Trump] who said he would hire the “best people,” and fire them within months it seems, is as confused today as he was in January. Americans are still not sure who is in charge, is it Dr. Giroir, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, or is it the latest contestant on the island, Dr. Moncef Slaoui, apparently riddled with financial conflicts of interest.
Joe Biden was nearly 72 years old in October 2014 and helped Mr. Obama guide the U.S. through two pandemics the Swine Flu and Ebola. Under the leadership of Mr. Trump COVID-19 has killed more people in 5 months than the total war casualties in Vietnam.
Mr. Trump is trying hard to paint a picture of Mr. Biden as old and doddering. There is a difference between the old and the foolish. Staring into the sun during a solar eclipse, recommending an untested and untried drug for the Covid-19 virus and most importantly playing hide the ball, or mask, with the American people is foolish. Yes, Mr. Biden has appeared old but also competent, thoughtful, sincere, and most importantly honest. So when you push your bifocals up on your nose, invented by 78-year old Benjamin Franklin, or that tow truck driver uses his “trucker’s friend” tool, invented by 85-year old Gys van Beek remember age is not always a detriment.
Age, in the case of Mr. Trump, has just allowed him more years to be foolish. “If we didn't do testing, we'd have no cases… When you do tests, you have cases,” Mr. Trump told Fox News last night. Joe Biden may not be Peter Mark Roget, who published the Thesaurus at age 73, but knows that Donald Trump is addlepated and he [Biden], is apt for the job.
