State Department Inspector General to Give “Urgent” Briefing to Congress. Another Shoe to Drop?

abcnews.go.com/…

ABC News reports that the Inspector General of the US State Department will brief congressional staffers from a number of Senate and House committees about legal documents that appear to be related to the Ukraine, Rudolph Giuliani and the Bidens. The briefing will happen Wednesday afternoon in a secure location on Capital Hill.

The unusual nature and timing of the briefing – during a congressional recess – suggest it may be connected to a recent intelligence community whistleblower allegation which describes, in part, the State Department’s role in coordinating interactions between Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, and Ukrainian officials.

ABC affiliate KAKE has a few more details.

The email that went to staff suggested it was “urgent,” sources say. One congressional aide described the State IG's request as “highly unusual and cryptically worded.”

The inspector general said the reason for the briefing was the office had obtained documents from acting legal adviser in the State Department. ABC News first reported the briefing. The offer for the briefing was sent roughly an hour after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's strongly worded letter Tuesday pushing back against Democrats' scheduled depositions for State Department officials.

It seems to be a matter of some importance, but not so important that the Inspector General is asking to meet directly with congressional leaders.
