If he doesn’t ooze his way out of this, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) announced that he will vote for the resolution that seeks to block Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. If all 47 Democrats hold and with the other Senate Republicans who have stated they will vote for this resolution — Collins, Murkowski, and Tillis, this means that there is a majority in the Senate to approve the resolution. Trump will veto this resolution, but he will be forced to do so.
As I have repeatedly heard, no one wants to be number 51 when defying a president or your voters. If this holds, I have no real idea why Paul decided to become number 51. His real reasons may eventually leak out. But I do not believe that this is about constitutional powers. Paul throws around the U.S. Constitution to justify his votes, but that is about the extent of his knowledge of the Constitution. Just throwing it around like a football.
I can’t figure out what he is up to.
