Ron Johnson won't rule out challenging Electoral College results; Romney calls it 'madness'

I’m from Wisconsin, and I lived there for most of my life. I’ve occasionally joked that my fellow Wisconsinites’ choosing Ron Johnson over Russ Feingold (twice!) felt a little like your mom divorcing your dad so she could date Carrot Top.
In other words — FUCKING INSANE!
But as fatuous and stupid as Johnson has been throughout his senatorial career, his apish antics have now reached their apogee with his perpetual Trump-fluffing.
You may have read that Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama has pledged to challenge the Electoral College results when Congress meets to certify Joe Biden’s election win, but he’d need a member of the Senate to join him in his batshit barminess. And he may — just may — have found his sap in the dumbest member of the Senate, RoJo the Clown.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Wednesday did not rule out challenging the results of the Electoral College next month when Congress formally certifies the vote.
Johnson, who is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced the same day that he would hold a hearing next week on the “irregularities” of the 2020 election.
When asked if he plans to challenge the election results, Johnson told reporters: “I would say it depends on what we found out. I need more information. The American people need more information. I'm not ready to just close and slam the book on this thing and go 'OK, let's walk away from it.' ”
I’m assuming this is all for Donald Trump’s consumption, because man cannot live on McRibs alone.
In fact, there’s good reason to believe Johnson is perfectly aware that Joe Biden won a fair election, but he’s jibber-jabbering the company line (i.e., Trump was robbed because … affidavits! and “hey, look at those mysterious suitcases under those tables in Georgia!”).
Here was Mark Becker, former chair of the Brown County, Wisconsin, Republican Party, writing last Wednesday in The Bulwark after speaking personally with Johnson:
The TL;DR of the call was this: Senator Johnson knows that Joe Biden won a free and fair election. He is refusing to admit it publicly and stoking conspiracies that undermine our democracy solely because it would be “political suicide” to oppose Trump. I find this unconscionable.
So Johnson knows full well who won this election, and he also knows Brooks’ insane country-killing initiative will go nowhere. But he’s going to go along with it because the current president is a vindictive troll with the impulse control of a Waffle House grease fire.
Meanwhile, one of the few GOP voices of what can charitably be described as reason is calling this out for what it is — utter barking-mad insanity:
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Tuesday criticized the push by House Republicans to challenge the Electoral College vote in Congress.
“Madness,” Romney told reporters. “This is madness. We have a process. Recounts are appropriate. Going to the court is appropriate. Pursuing every legal avenue is appropriate. But trying to get electors not to do what the people voted to do is madness.”
Needless to say, this effort will be unsuccessful. Will the Democratic House vote to overturn the election of a Democratic president? I’ve seen a lot of things over the past five years I never thought I’d see, but … no.
However, this could turn into a loyalty test for some of our Trumpier congresspersons. And, needless to say, any objection to the clear intent of the voters will only serve to further Donald Trump’s crusade to undermine our democracy.
So get your popcorn, but be ready to salt it with your own tears.
It’s funny on some level, but ultimately it’s just sad.
