Well, so much for Saint Mitt. Just yesterday I had a diary praising Romney for actually putting the country first, not to mention common decency. Today he proved me wrong:
A day after threatening to withhold his vote, Sen. Mitt Romney signaled Friday that he will support a Republican effort to obtain documents and testimony relating to work done in Ukraine by the son of former vice president Joe Biden.Romney (R-Utah) will vote for issuing a subpoena in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee next week after receiving assurances from the panel’s chairman, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), “that any interview of the witness would occur in a closed setting without a hearing or public spectacle,” Romney spokeswoman Liz Johnson said in a statement.
Republicans may inefficient at governing, but they sure know how to keep their troops in line. It didn’t even take Moscow Mitch and his sidekick 24 hours to get Romney back on the reservation.
Susan Collins could have told Romney what these sort of assurances are worth, but to do that, she would have had to admit to herself that she had been had. Over and over. The whole point of investigating Hunter Biden is to create a public spectacle; Romney knew that when he told reporters yesterday that “There's no question but that the appearance of looking into Burisma and Hunter Biden appears political, and I think people are tired of these kind of political investigations.”
Johnson had let his witch hunt fade when it looked like Biden wasn’t going to be a viable candidate, but as soon as Biden won South Carolina, Johnson was right back out there, holier than thou, proclaiming that the thoroughly debunked accusations over Biden and Burisma just had to reexamined for the good of the country. By which he meant Republican country.
Joe Biden needs to speak up, now, loudly; the key in these kinds of shenanigans is getting out in front of the story; just ask John Kerry how well his slow response to his swift-boating went.
More than that, every Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security committee needs to denounce this, over and over, as loudly as possible, AND to keep reminding everyone that Ron Johnson knew about AND approved of Biden’s work to get rid of the corrupt Ukrainian prosecutor.
Put the Republicans on the defensive. And keep them there. Make this about them, because sure as f*ck they’re going to try to make it about us.
Back to the Kerry example. A re-election is normally a referendum on the current president. W was able to make it a referendum about Kerry — more to the point, about the GOP caricature of Kerry. Trump and his minions are doing it again. We cannot let them get away with it.
