Why doesn't the US send airplanes to Ukraine, when Russians sent MIGs to Vietnam during Vietnam war?

Russians (USSR but in essence Russians) were sending hundreds of MIGs to Vietnam during Vietnam war. Now Americans say they cannot send airplanes to Ukraine not to escalate war. Why Russians that time did not escalate Vietnam war and it did not start 3rd world war (eg Americans attack USSR as revenge for direct involvement into Vietnam war)?
