Why are the Democrats so insistent to make the Republicans raise the debt ceiling?

Why couldn't they simply stand back and simply agree to whatever the majority of Republicans decide?

Then:

  • if there is a debt ceiling increase, the Republicans will be obvious hypocrites.
  • if there is no debt ceiling increase, any resulting economic collapse will be obviously their fault. The Republicans know this and, if given the choice, won't choose this option.

Seems like good politics for the Democrats either way. Why don't they do it?
