What did Putin do to insure that he doesn't get overthrown by a military coup or to reduce the likelihood of it?

There's increased defection and the number of discontent people is growing. I am thinking it should raise alarm and the elites are considering that there's also a risk of some military coup happening. Now, I am wondering what the Russian elites did to prevent that from happening, and in general what might be the steps usually taken to remedy a similar situation.
