To the people who vote in open-list systems, what makes you choose to vote for a particular candidate? [closed]

I'm interested in voter psychology under open-list PR system.

Since there are so many candidates to choose from, voters ineveitably need some kind of mechanism to sort out their preferences. That's why I'm curious about the thought process that goes through voter's mind under this system.

For example:

  1. Do you vote for the first candidate on the list regardless who they are since you only care about the party platform?

  2. Do you pick a candidate because they had more media exposure (i.e. famous)?

  3. Do you pick a candidate because they've had face-to-face encounter with you personally (i.e. familiarity)?

  4. Do you pick a candidate based on personal attributes such as gender / ethnicity / age / class background?

Both general and anecdotal response are appreciated. I'm just fascinated with PR voting systems.
