pre-debate disinformation stunt? Iranian (or Russian) Proud Boys… maybe

Remember that there have been multiple WH attempts to reframe what is primarily a Russian election offensive in 2020 as also parallel to China and Iran activity. It does explain the foreign policy whining by the Trump campaign about the debate topics. It also explains the syncretic use by Russia of RWNJ groups to subvert social media as in 2016. The old tricks are the best ones, maybe. (And sure the Iranians would send some of their email blasts through Estonia). Apparently, DNI Ratcliffe was speaking to an audience of one when he suggested that this latest attempt was meant to damage Trump.
