Pfizer Is Sending Surplus Vaccine Made in the US to Canada, Mexico, and Brazil

Pfizer/BioNTech is starting to ship Covid vaccine manufactured at its Kalamazoo, Michigan plant to Mexico, Canada, and Brazil saying it is now producing more than enough capacity to meet continuing US needs.

Pfizer will next week start supplying Canada with COVID-19 vaccine made in its U.S. plant, a senior official said on Friday, making it the second country to receive doses from the Kalamazoo, Michigan facility…

Pfizer has shipped more than 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Mexico, making it the country's largest supplier of shots. Pfizer is also shipping 1 million shots to Brazil this week, its health minister said on Wednesday. Brazil signed an agreement in March to acquire 100 million Pfizer shots and it is in talks to purchase 100 million more.

Pfizer will use extra capacity in its U.S. facilities to deliver coronavirus vaccines abroad while continuing to meet its commitment to supply the United States, a source familiar with the matter said, adding the drug maker will also make shipments from Belgium

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday morning at a press conference that the arrival of AstraZeneca doses from the U.S. was “probable.”

The U.S. said this week that it plans to share 60 million doses of AstraZeneca, starting with 10 million that are near clearance by regulators in the coming weeks. The U.S. hasn’t said which countries will receive the initial shipments, though President Joe Biden said India would be among them.

Vaccinations and Population By Country

Nation             Doses given (millions)            Population (millions)

Canada                       13.3                                        37.6

Mexico                        17.4                                     129.9

Brazil                           47.1                                     213.8

The US has administered more than 240 million vaccinations since December 11, all but 20.1 million since Joe Biden was inaugurated, according to the CDC’s report for yesterday. When today’s numbers come in tomorrow, it will likely show that 223 million vaccinations occurred in Biden’s first 100 days. Another big win.

The three approved vaccine manufacturers are now delivering more than 3 million doses daily for the US while doses being used in the US are averaging 2.55 million, 1 million of which are first time doses. Vaccinations have slowed  in the US. About 43.6% of all US residents have received at least one dose. For adult Americans, 55.4% have taken one or more shots, and the percentage for senior Americans is 82.3%.

Novavax is expected to receive approval for its vaccine’s use by the Food and Drug Administration in May. Pfizer’s vaccine is also likely to receive approval for vaccine use on 12-year-olds to 15-year-olds soon.

Covid Precautions Have Conquered the Flu, for Now

Scientific American: “Since the novel coronavirus began its global spread, influenza cases reported to the World Health Organization have dropped to minuscule levels. The reason, epidemiologists think, is that the public health measures taken to keep the coronavirus from spreading also stop the flu. Influenza viruses are transmitted in much the same way as SARS-CoV-2, but they are less effective at jumping from host to host.”
