One Half of Adult Americans Are Vaccinated

As of today, 50% of US residents over the age of 18 have been vaccinated with at least one shot for Covid-19. Yesterday’s report by the CDC showed 49.7% of adults have received the first injection while 31.8% have completed their vaccinations.
The report also shows 39% of the total American population has received at least one dose, and we should get to 40% on Monday. As for Americans over the age of 65, yesterday’s report shows a hopeful 80.7% have been jabbed at least once.
On a less positive note, the 3.6 million reported having been vaccinated Friday is about 1 million less than the previous Friday. However, a one-day anomaly could be an adjustment in the numbers as the CDC refines their reports. Before the third relief bill, some vaccinating centers were understaffed and less able to report every day so the CDC allowed a 72-hour window for reports. (I haven’t looked through the fine print of today’s report yet.)
In any event, we are only about five days away from reaching Joe Biden’s goal of 200 million vaccinations in his first 100 days, well ahead of schedule.
Now is the time to push for everyone to get an appointment.
The updated vaccination figures released Saturday come after officials pushed for larger swaths of the country to get vaccinated. Fauci told Business Insider in an interview last week that between 70 percent and 85 percent of the American population would need to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity.
The U.S. has had a more effective vaccine distribution than some other countries, especially in Europe, where the World Health Organization earlier this month said the vaccine rollouts have been “unacceptably slow.”
Vaccine Hesitancy May Be Waning Slightly But Still a Problem
- Broadly, the COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor has found that vaccine confidence in the U.S. has increased as more and more people have seen their friends and family members get vaccinated, and now a majority of the public has either already gotten vaccinated or is ready to get the vaccine as soon as they can. Yet with a small but persistent group opposed to getting the vaccine and many others still on the fence, the U.S. may soon hit a point where vaccine supply exceeds demand, a situation that is already the case in certain communities.
- While some media narratives have focused on which groups are most “vaccine hesitant,” our research finds that no group is monolithic in their vaccine attitudes, and in every demographic segment there are large shares of people who are ready to get the vaccine, others who are in “wait and see” mode, and some who are more resistant. Even though certain demographics (for example, Republicans) have a higher share than other groups saying they don’t intend to get vaccinated and others (for example, Black adults) have a higher share saying they want to “wait and see,” we’ve found that majorities across all demographic groups are at least somewhat open to getting the vaccine.
Moderna Plans for 3rd Booster Shot
“There will be likely a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months. And then from there, there will be an annual revaccination. But all of that needs to be confirmed,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Thursday at a virtual event hosted by CVS Health.
A third booster shot against the virus is not yet required, but health experts say it could provide additional immunity against COVID-19 variants that are beginning to spread to the U.S. from Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
