One Fourth of US Vaccinated; Approval of AstraZeneca Shots Likely in April After Successful US Trial

The US has given at least one Covid vaccine dose to 24.9% of its residents as of yesterday, according to the Center for Disease control. Some 32% of adult Americans have received a jab and 69.2% of Americans over 65 years of age have gotten at least one shot.
With Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna both increasing production and Johnson and Johnson scheduled to deliver 20 million doses by the end of the month, vaccinations look likely to ramp up even more by the end of the month. J&J has only deliver 4.3 million doses with most of the doses expected in the last few days.
AstraZeneca’s US Trials Show 79% Efficacy
www.msn.com/… AstraZeneca says it will apply for FDA’s emergency approval in the first half of April. Its US trial showed 79% efficacy and 100% against severe Covid-19. The head of the company says it will have 30 million doses ready for delivery in the US upon approval.
The AstraZeneca vaccine has a 2 dose regimen and has no special refrigeration requirement. Many governments have already approved its use but the FDA’s approval will help to overcome some lingering doubts about the vaccine due to missteps made during its earlier trials and allegations about blood clots which now seems to be unmerited.
The findings of a large U.S. trial have shown that the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford is 79% effective in preventing symptomatic illness and 100% effective against severe disease and hospitalization. Ruud Dobber, president of AstraZeneca U.S., joined CNBC’s Meg Tirrell and the CNBC’s “Squawk Box” crew on Monday to discuss the results.
Production of Vaccines Ramp Up at Pfizer and Moderna
Both the production and administration of shots have picked up in recent weeks, however. Now, some 2.5 million people in the U.S. are vaccinated daily on average, up from about 500,000 in early January, though many who want a vaccine still can’t get it.
The increased output should be enough to fully vaccinate 76 million people in the U.S. in March, another 75 million in April and then 89 million more in May, according to estimates from Evercore ISI analysts. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require two doses.
