NH-Gov: Eric Holder's NDRC Goes After Gov. Chris Sununu's (R) Efforts To Gerrymander New Hampshire
Received this e-mail today from Eric Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee:
A few weeks ago, New Hampshire's Republican governor, Chris Sununu, VETOED a bipartisan bill to create an independent redistricting commission. This is the first time in recent memory a governor anywhere in the country has vetoed an independent redistricting commission.
Sununu claimed he was vetoing the bill because gerrymandering is “rare” in New Hampshire and “our current redistricting process is fair and representative of all the people in our State.”
Earth to Chris: New Hampshire's maps have been manipulated by Republicans.In fact, New Hampshire Public Radio found that “since 1994, Republicans have often come out with 10 to 15 percent more seats in the Senate than a neutral map would have yielded.” That's why New Hampshire is on our list of 2020 target states.
Tell Governor Sununu to drop his defense of gerrymandering and support fair redistricting!
This veto is just the latest in a string of overtly partisan actions from Governor Sununu. He also recently vetoed three separate bills on gun safety, one bill to raise the minimum wage, and another that would have funded workforce trainingprograms. Sununu claims he's a moderate, but the truth is he's a far-right partisan.
He even has people like Scott Walker backing him up! Walker, who is now devoting his time to helping Republicans keep their gerrymandered advantage, authored an op-ed in the Concord Monitor defending Sununu's veto.
Republicans currently enjoy an undeniable structural advantage in New Hampshire, and Sununu's veto is meant to lock in that advantage for another decade. If New Hampshire is going to get fair maps, it's clear that Governor Sununu needs to go — we're already targeting him with an ad campaign to let New Hampshire voters know about his hyper-partisan agenda.
