Mulvaney on Trump's G7 faceplant: 'He still considers himself to be in the hospitality business'

So Donald Trump — very loudly — proclaimed last night that next year’s G7 summit won’t be at his Doral resort after all, because the media and Democrats are so, so awful and simply don’t appreciate his largesse:

No one knows what he means by “no profit” and “zero cost,” of course. He would have been filling up hotel rooms during a historically slow season for the resort while selling meals, rounds of golf, and stupid swag — and no doubt taking tributes from diplomats hoping to curry favor with the sultan of sweat himself. Not only that, his resort would have received loads of free publicity, which would have likely been worth untold millions.

But, hey, why miss a chance to direct a few ALL CAPS TWEETS at the horrible, horrible media and opposition party?

So, once again, Mick Mulvaney was dispatched this morning to defend the indefensible on the safest ground he could find outside of an Alabama Shoney’s: Fox News. Unfortunately for him, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace is occasionally inclined to do his actual job.

MULVANEY: I honestly think what you saw in the tweet was real. The president isn’t one for holding back his feelings and emotions about something. He was honestly surprised at the level of pushback. At the end of the day, he still considers himself to be in the hospitality business, and he saw an opportunity to take the biggest leaders from around the world, and he wanted to put on the absolute best show, the best visit that he possibly could, and he was very comfortable doing that at Doral. And I think we were all surprised at the level of pushback. I think it’s the right decision to change. We’ll have to find someplace else, and my guess is we’ll find someplace else that the media won’t like for another reason.

And, to his eternal credit, Wallace zinged Mulvaney with the obvious response:

WALLACE: I just have to pick up. You say he considers himself in the hospitality business. He’s the president of the United States.

Uh huh. But he obviously considers himself to be in the hospitality business. That couldn’t be more fucking obvious.

So what if, say, Jimmy Carter had wanted to hold a huge global summit on his peanut farm, where myriad peanut products would have been available for sale — and then, after the stupid idea had been shot down, his chief of staff had gone on the air to say, well, he still thinks of himself as a peanut farmer?

For some reason I don’t think Republicans would have been so forgiving. The guy was attacked by a rabbit once and they never let that one go.

No, I’m not buying the “aw, shucks, he wanted to do a great thing for the country” line. Trump does nothing positive for this country unless it fluffs him up or lines his pockets at the same time.

Try again, Mick.
