Received this e-mail from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D. OR) in support of U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D. MI) re-election campaign:
You've heard me say it: even if we defeat Donald Trump, our progressive movement can only move forward unless we also upend Mitch McConnell's Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.
The fact of the matter is that Democrats have no chance of regaining Senate control without re-electing my friend Senator Gary Peters in Michigan.
But right now, Senator Peters is busy doing his job, not campaigning.
After all, Michigan is the latest hot spot for Covid-19 — third in the nation for confirmed cases and, sadly, deaths.
You've heard Trump talk about Michigan, insulting the Governor, and even suggesting he wouldn't help the state. And now he's encouraging his fans to reject the stay-at-home rules, leading to protests and even the blockade of a hospital.
Meanwhile, Senator Peters has been right in the middle of the recovery fight.
Just this past week, he proposed paying frontline health care workers a “pandemic premium” of $25,000 to reward those who are putting themselves in harm's way for the rest of us.
Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell know that control of the Senate majority goes through Michigan—that's why they're sending their SuperPACs to beat Gary and replace him with a McConnell rubber stamp.
So let's show Gary Peters that we've got his back. Let's show him that our grassroots team has his back, to help him stay on track for re-election while he's fighting to stop Covid-19 and help Michigan — and all of us — recover.
Gary's leadership is exactly what we need in the Senate, especially now. He's been in our corner every time Trump and McConnell try to take away our health care options.
Right now, Gary's in a dead heat with his opponent. And he's busy doing his job as a Senator. So, let's make sure our grassroots movement rallies to him.
