Received this e-mail today from Academy Award winning actress and activist, Jane Fonda, in support of U.S. Senator Ed Markey’s (D. MA) re-election campaign:
This past month has been an important reminder that our fight against the climate crisis must be intersectional. These challenging times have underscored why we need leaders like Senator Ed Markey who understand how the defining issues of our time are converging and who can craft solutions to move us forward.
The fights against the coronavirus pandemic and systemic racism reveal that there is no climate justice without racial, social, and economic justice.
Our only hope at defeating the climate crisis is with a multi-racial, intergenerational movement of activists. And we must elect leaders who understand that those who are hardest hit by the impacts of the climate crisis — particularly communities of color — must be centered in our climate response.
That is what the Green New Deal is all about.
When Senator Ed Markey and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote the Green New Deal, they made clear that frontline communities must be a critical focus of our solutions. They understand that there is no saving the planet without defeating environmental racism and ensuring social justice for all.
The Green New Deal provides the bold framework that we need to rebuild our economy and help end systemic racism and inequality. In this defining moment for our country and planet, we must fight harder than ever before to elect leaders who understand this.
Ed gets it, and he stands up and delivers for us. He is committed to our movement and our fight for justice. But he is facing his toughest race of all time, and we need to have his back in this battle. His expert leadership is needed now more than ever. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting Ed’s re-election to the US Senate:
We have a lot of work to do. Now is the time to be bold and to be loud. I know that our movement has what it takes to re-elect Ed. Ed is our champion in the battle against the climate crisis, working with us to ensure justice and equality for all.
