Here’s the latest news out of Louisiana courtesy of Cygnal Polling’s latest poll:
Just a few days until the election, a poll by Cygnal, a national polling and research firm, shows Republican gubernatorial challenger Eddie Rispone is closing the gap on incumbent Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards. Rispone trails Edwards by only 2 points according to the poll.
“54% of voters have a favorable opinion of Edwards, but not all of those voters are convinced Edwards deserves reelection.” said Brent Buchanan, Cygnal’s CEO and founder. “At the same time, a generic Republican is dominating the unnamed ballot statewide.”
The Cygnal survey, conducted November 7 – 9, with 800 likely general election voters, shows Edwards leading Rispone 50% to 48%, with 2% of voters still undecided. As the final days of the gubernatorial campaigns come to a close, Rispone is winning the vast majority of voters who cast their ballot for other candidates in the October 12 primary election.
“Edwards nearly topped out his vote share in the primary and now the majority of primary voters who voted for other candidates are coalescing around Rispone,” said Chris Kratzer, Cygnal’s VP of research and analysis. “Edwards has a narrowing path to victory, though it still exists.”
The poll also looked at public opinion surrounding the potential impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump. Overall, a majority of Louisiana voters believe the President should not be impeached, with 52% saying “definitely not impeach.” The President has an overall favorability of 51% among 2019 general election voters according to the Cygnal poll.
This mixed-mode survey was conducted on November 7 – 9 with 800 likely 2019 general election voters giving the poll a margin of error of ±3.46%. Interviews were conducted using live agents calling cell phones and landlines, an online sample acquired via email and SMS invitations sent to known registered voters, and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) to landline phones. This methodology reflects the way voters now communicate with more people using online communication rather than answering their phone.
The runoff election is Saturday, November 16th. We can’t take anything for granted and we can’t get complacent. Click here to donate and get involved with Edwards’ campaign.
