LA DA George Gascón (D) Helps A Fellow Criminal Justice Reform Advocate Win A CA State Senate Seat
Received this e-mail today from Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón (D. CA), in support of Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager’s (D. CA) State Senate campaign in the upcoming special election to fill outgoing LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s (D. CA) seat on March 2nd:
Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager (D. CA)
As you undoubtedly know, the California District Attorneys’ Association has doubled down to block my efforts to implement fair, just, common sense sentencing changes.
But you maynotknow that on Tuesday, in a deceptive, self-indulgent and possibly illegal move, they launched a last minute smear against Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager, our strong ally in the fight for change and the candidate I support in the Special Election to succeed Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell in the State Senate.
Pleasecontribute right nowso Sydney can respond to these deceptive attacks before the March 2ndvoting deadline.
I find it outrageous that the CDAA would fund ads clearly intended to harm Sydney’s campaign. This organization is already under investigation by the Attorney General’s office for siphoning funds intended for environmental enforcement and protection and diverting funds to their lobbying operation. You may have read about the audit of CDAA, exposed by the San Francisco Chronicle, revealing how they misappropriated these funds. You may have also read Sydney’s opinion piece calling them out for their malfeasance. It takes courage to go after the CDAA in the middle of a campaign. This is exactly the courage we need.
CDAA is seeking revenge by targeting Sydney Kamlager for calling them out after their illegal spending became public. They even admitted it on their website. Equally disgraceful is their actual ad, which falsely claims that Kamlager voted to make it easier for criminals to obtain guns.
Sydney has been at the forefront of legislative efforts to hold rogue law enforcement officials accountable for abuse, and to bring about change in the justice system. She authored the CRISES ACT, and passed legislation reforming probation. This year, she is going bold by authoring legislation to eliminate gang enhancements, reduce sentencing, and to hold law enforcement officers accountable to the public. Her backbone and truth-telling are why she has earned the support of Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Karen Bass, Black Lives Matter Co-founder Patrisse Cullors, Real Justice PAC, and me.
With only two weeks before the election, Sydney hadn’t planned on having to respond to these cynical, sleazy attack ads. Now, she needs to raise funds to do so and she needs your help today. Pleasecontribute what you can.
Sydney sticks her neck out for justice, and we need to come together and back her up. It is obvious that the same prosecutors who block reform don’t want her in the State Senate. Let’s defeat them. Again.
