When our most basic rights are under attack – when children are separated from their families at the border, our planet’s future is in peril, and a woman’s right to bodily autonomy is being threatened – we rely on our nation’s system of checks and balances to ensure that the rule of law has the final word.
But when leaders like our president try to keep their power unchecked and trample on our Constitution, it’s up to the rest of us to defend our shared values.
Democratic Attorneys General are serving as a desperately needed legal check on the worst abuses coming out of Washington. But in only a matter of days, two critical Democratic AG seats in Kentucky and Mississippi are on the ballot – and while Republicans are pulling out all the stops to flip these seats, many Democrats are focusing entirely on the 2020 presidential race and neglecting the competitive elections this year.
Long before I served as senator or Secretary of State, I was a lawyer in Arkansas, fighting for families who needed a champion. It's some of the work I am most proud of.So I know firsthand how absolutely pivotal Attorneys General –the people's lawyers– can be, especially in the South where the rights of the most vulnerable are so frequently under attack.
If we can hold on to these AG seats, wecandefend those rights for years to come. We can protect against the constant assault on our voting rights and defend our progress on health care. We can stand up for every American, no matter who they are or where they come from or who they choose to love.
Just days from now, Democrat Jennifer Riley Collins could make history as the first African American woman to hold statewide office in Mississippi. And Greg Stumbo could build on the progress of the current Democratic AG in Kentucky. Both candidates will work tirelessly to protect the rights of everyone in their states and across the country, but solidifying these victories cannot happen without you.
I’m asking you to join me in defending our future. These elections are how we affirm our values and ensure our government faces the accountability it needs, and I am so grateful to have you with me in this fight for what we believe in. We have always been, and always will be, stronger together.
