Judge convicts women who entered wildlife refuge to bring water to immigrants

What the hell is wrong with us?

On Friday, a federal judge found four women guilty of illegally entering a national wildlife refuge. Why were they there? To place food and water in the desert for the benefit of hungry migrants.

Maybe this is one of those times we shouldn’t adhere to the letter of the law, ya think?

From the AP:

U.S. Magistrate Judge Bernardo Velasco’s ruling Friday marked the first conviction against humanitarian aid volunteers in a decade.

The four found guilty of misdemeanors in the recent case were volunteers for No More Deaths, which said in a statement the group had been providing life-saving aid to migrants. The volunteers include Natalie Hoffman, Oona Holcomb, Madeline Huse and Zaachila Orozco-McCormick.

Hoffman was found guilty of operating a vehicle inside Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, entering the federally protected area without a permit, and leaving water jugs and cans of beans there in August 2017. The others were found guilty of entering without a permit and leaving behind personal property.

Whatever you think of the women’s “crime,” we sure seem to have lost track of what’s moral and what isn’t.

You can crash an economy through carelessness and greed, throwing hundreds of thousands out of work and bankrupting countless families, but you’ll never go to jail for it.

But put a jug of water in the desert to save lives and you’ll be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Our country is sick, and we have a long way to go before we get well again.
