This reminds me of that cliche about old dogs and new tricks. From the Washington Post:
As he campaigns for president, Joe Biden tells a moving but false war story
As the Post reports:
HANOVER, N.H. — Joe Biden painted a vivid scene for the 400 people packed into a college meeting hall. A four-star general had asked the then-vice president to travel to Kunar province in Afghanistan, a dangerous foray into “godforsaken country” to recognize the remarkable heroism of a Navy captain.
Some told him it was too risky, but Biden said he brushed off their concerns. “We can lose a vice president,” he said. “We can’t lose many more of these kids. Not a joke.”
The Navy captain, Biden recalled Friday night, had rappelled down a 60-foot ravine under fire and retrieved the body of an American comrade, carrying him on his back. Now the general wanted Biden to pin a Silver Star on the American hero who, despite his bravery, felt like a failure.
“He said, ‘Sir, I don’t want the damn thing!’ ” Biden said, his jaw clenched and his voice rising to a shout. “’Do not pin it on me, Sir! Please, Sir. Do not do that! He died. He died!’ ”
“This is the God’s truth,” Biden had said as he told the story. “My word as a Biden.”
Biden was a U.S. Senator when he visited Afghanistan in 2008 not Vice-President. The guy, Biden was talking about was Army Specialist Kyle J. White and not a Navy captain. Biden didn’t pin a medal on the soldier. Obama was the one who presented the Medal of Honor to White several years later.
Yes, I know what Biden supporters are going to say, “Trump lies all the time! You are going to bust Biden for embellishing war stories! C’mon!”
I remember when I supported Biden during his first run for president back in 1988. Biden got caught lying and plagairising speeches from British politician Neil Kinnock. Back in the day, things like that cost you, and Biden had to bow out.
And it appears that Biden has not learned a damn thing since that time.
But here we are over thirty years later, and Biden is still shooting himself in the foot. Biden didn’t need to do this. There are many other legitimate stories he could have told to get his point across. Why make a hash of a war story?
And what was Biden’s response to the Washington Post reporting on this inaccurate story?
In an interview with the Post and Courier in South Carolina on Thursday, Biden said the “essence” of the story he told is true and said he didn’t “understand what they’re talking about,” regarding the Washington Post’s piece.
