Jeff Flake says he might run against Trump in 2020

As one of the few non-genuflecting members of the Republican Party, Sen. Jeff Flake has been a reliable thorn in Donald Trump’s side.

That may continue after Flake leaves Congress in January.

In an interview with Politico, Flake said that “somebody needs to run” against Trump in the 2020 primaries:

“I’ve not ruled it out. I’ve not ruled it in. Just, somebody needs to run on the Republican side,” Flake said on Friday in a lengthy conversation with POLITICO and The Hill on Friday. Flake said both outgoing Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Nebraska GOP Sen. Ben Sasse could give Trump a credible challenge.

Flake insisted that Trump’s popularity in the party is ruining the GOP’s long-term viability and predicted only a brutal electoral loss could make that clear.

“I hope somebody does [run], just to remind Republicans what it means to be conservative and what it means to be decent. We’ve got to bring that back,” Flake said. “You can whip up the base for a cycle or two but it wears thin. Anger and resentment are not a governing philosophy.”

Well, in my experience, the Venn diagram of “conservative” and “decent” now overlaps about as much as “Carmelite nun” and “Juggs magazine subscriber.” But that’s neither here nor there.

The point is, at least someone in the Republican Party sees that losing the White House is preferable to allowing a gormless kookaburra to run roughshod over the Constitution and the rule of law just so conservatives can own the libtards and pass a few more plutocrat-fluffing tax cuts.

The last credible challenger to primary a sitting president was Ted Kennedy in 1980. That very well may have damaged Carter, who went on to lose to Ronald Reagan. In 1992, Pat Buchanan ran against George H.W. Bush. Buchanan didn’t prove to be much of a speed bump — at worst it was like running over Hitler’s mustache with your Humvee — but George I eventually did lose to Bill Clinton.

Regardless, anything that can leak some of the gas out of Trump’s tumescent dirigible head is a welcome development.

So, yes, go ahead Sen. Flake. Make the GOP (kind of) sane again.
