Is teaching an art or a science?

I was asked that question a number of years ago, and wrote a brief piece where I explored the issue.  As I now apply to independent schools for the possibility of teaching in one next year, this is one of the documents I include to give a sense of who/what I am as a teacher.  Choosing to share it here now because I have applied to four opening so far this week, am actively under consideration at two more schools, and in theory in the pool for several others.  Nothing may come of any of that, but I reread that (and my philosophy of education, which also gets included) as a I prepared for a phone interview that got postponed to next week.
