Is It Really the Far-Right?
Yet another mass shooting happened overnight near my sister’s home in Virginia. After the body counts, the gnashing of teeth, and the solemn looks of talking heads interviewing the survivors and grieving family members, the right-wingers will step in and victim blame. The Alex Jones(s), Marjorie Taylor Greene(s), and Lauren Boebert(s) will first offer thoughts and prayers, then, like clockwork, will get around to throwing mud at the victims. Living life has literally become like the adage; dodged a bullet.
I keep hearing the far right is a fringe group like the far left, but the far left is not shooting Jews at a synagogue, blacks at a grocery store, or gays at a nightclub. On a few occasions, a self-described left-winger, like the shooter of Steve Scalise at a baseball practice, rears its ugly head and is condemned immediately by not a few but every Democratic politician and the “liberal” media. Unfortunately, we do not get that from the right. Former serviceman Richard Fierro saved countless lives in service to the nation and at Club Q Saturday night. The right-wing media are assailing him, asking why a combat vet was in a gay club. Herschel Walker, locked in a Senate battle with current Senator Raphael Warnock, has boiled his campaign down to pronouns, wokeness, vampires, and werewolves.
Republicans seem to think making any liberal they disagree with a target (before and after a murdering rampage) is a winning strategy, which tells you what they think of their voters. Just yesterday, Mike Pompeo, former Secretary of State in the Trump administration, took aim at the head of the teacher’s union. “I get asked, ‘Who’s the most dangerous person in the world? Is it Chairman Kim, is it Xi Jinping?’ The most dangerous person in the world is Randi Weingarten,” Pompeo said.
The Far-Right?
The former President[Trump] acknowledged QAnon, who traffics in the notion of blood-drinking liberals. The defeated candidate for Senator from Arizona, Blake Masters’ pulled the hood off his blatant racism, “We do have a gun-violence problem in this country, and it’s gang violence,” he said. “It’s people in Chicago, St. Louis, shooting each other. Very often, you know, Black people, frankly.” Who can forget the loser in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial race [Doug Mastriano] who contributed to a Nazi sympathizer? Rounding out the crew of the far-right is the anti-Semitism of Marjorie Taylor Greene, who retweeted that Jewish space lasers were responsible for California forest fires.
Although the Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell complained about “candidate quality,” the GOP was four-square behind Mastriano and Masters. The perspective new Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, has promised to put Marjorie Taylor Greene back on committees—from which she was stricken for supporting violence against her Democratic colleagues. The incoming chair[James Comer] of the House Oversight Committee is promising to fix America by investigating the President’s son Hunter Biden. Other committees will fix the problems of gas prices and inflation with investigations of Dr. Anthony Fauci and the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Not on their lists are the insurrection and the attempted overthrow of American democracy. The Republican party proves they are embracing the far right’s conspiracies and violence every day.
By the way, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
