If I Can’t Have Her…
The misplaced displays of so-called love for the U.S. by Republicans will eventually strangle her to death. We heard evidence of that in the opening testimony from one of four officers present at the Capitol insurrection on January 6. Faced with a frothing mob of white supremacists, fascists, and riotous glommer(s), officer Harry Dunn described in grim detail his confrontation with a MAGA adorned pink-t-shirted woman. He confessed to uncharacteristically breaking personal protocol by telling her he voted for Joe Biden. The mob was further incited when “ One woman in a pink MAGA shirt yelled, you hear that guys, this N-word voted for Joe Biden…” Lest you think this woman’s reaction was an isolated incident, Officer Dunn continued, “then the crowd—perhaps around 20 people—joined in screaming, BOO! F-ing N-word,” said officer Dunn.
This is not the behavior of patriots or “political prisoners” as some Republicans are describing some of the five hundred or more arrested for their violent acts of dishonor on 1/6, this cowardly behavior is reminiscent of spousal abusers—if I can’t have her[America] nobody will. U.S. Capitol Officers Dunn, and Sgt. Gonell along with Metropolitan Police officers Fanone and Hodges were bloodied, battered, and mentally, and physically bruised, only to be asked by Trump defenders; what did you do to cause your abuse? Fox News went on a full-scale and despicable denial of the facts, accusing the officers of crisis acting topped off by another Tucker Carlson graceless rant and laughter at the officers’ pain. If this were not bad enough, his partner in slime, Laura Ingraham, mockingly handed out the best dramatic performance awards.
My mom was a battered woman who died at age 49. I remember seeing her when I was 15 years old with a black eye and broken fingers. She expressed self-guilt as if she had caused her pain. Her reaction was predictable because friends, law enforcement, and even family asked; what had she done? Her perpetrator was an afterthought he was a so-called ‘good man” pushed to the limit. If all those words sound familiar it is because the GOP and their sycophants are repeating them in defense of the defenseless. The party that has elevated kvetching and moaning about liberals wanting to “defund the police” to new heights is instead demeaning the police.
These are the same people who continue to back the leader of an insurrection who also wanted Black Lives Matters protesters shot for no longer kneeling for social justice. Metro police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, are not perfect but fought gallantly on January 6 along with U.S. Capitol Hill police officers Sgt. Aquilino Gonell and Harry Dunn. As imperfect as they all may be, they came to work with the perfect attitude the morning of January 6—protecting American democracy.
Just as the ridiculous insecurity of abusers is the excuse to beat their spouses for serving cold soup or failing to bring their slippers, Republicans are victimizing America with their insecure reasoning, phony audits, and baby-eating liberals. Primarily, for women in this country, ignoring, minimizing, and justifying violence leads to their death; if we ignore, minimize, and justify insurrection, it will lead to the death of America.
