U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst said Friday that the Senate should hold hearings on any Supreme Court nomination President Donald Trump might make this year, even if he loses November's election.
“(If) it is a lame-duck session, I would support going ahead with any hearings that we might have,” Ernst, a Republican, said during a taping of the Iowa Press show on Iowa PBS. “And if it comes to an appointment prior to the end of the year, I would be supportive of that.”
The comments came after Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg disclosed that she is once again battling cancer, and she was hospitalized this week with a possible infection.
“I wish nothing but the best of health for Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” Ernst said. “I think we all do. And I’ll be praying for her.”
So apparently the “Biden Rule” Chuck Grassley used to deny Merrick Garland a hearing doesn’t apply to Trump. Got it. It’s fucking enraging because not only is it ridiculously hypocritical on Ernst’s end but she’s already bringing up the scenario of Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying before the election. She helped steal Obama’s Supreme Court nomination and now she wants to help steal Biden’s based on a stupid double standard. Meanwhile, Theresa Greenfield (D. IA) is already working on winning Iowa by taking away Ernst’s support in rural counties:
Kevin Middleswart, a farmer and former Warren County supervisor who assisted the campaigns of former Congressman Leonard Boswell and Gov. Tom Vilsack, said he has cautioned statewide Democratic candidates against relying heavily on a big city strategy.
When Bruce Braley competed in 2014 against Ernst for the open Senate seat, he won 14 of Iowa’s 99 counties. Democratic candidate Fred Hubbell earned support from 11 counties in his unsuccessful race against Gov. Kim Reynolds. Hillary Clinton carried just six Iowa counties in her match-up with Donald Trump in 2016.
The lack of a “rural strategy” has hurt Democrats in recent elections, Middleswart said.
“I think that Theresa has seen that, studied that, and can draw some wisdom from it,” he said. “She’s got to be her own candidate, but I think we need to define and counter some of the stories that they’re making up. The Republican Party is good at using the four-pronged approach of lie, deny, attack and repeat, like Trump.”
