Democratic Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3rd) has some pointed criticism for AWOL Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Trump’ s government shutdown:
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the Senate will not take up a bill to end the shutdown until Congress is sure the bill is something President Donald Trump will sign.
House Budget Committee Chairman-elect John Yarmuth on Wednesday described that as “absolutely absurd.”…
“It's a dereliction of duty and misunderstanding of the role of the Congress,” Yarmuth told the Courier Journal. “Basically, that's saying we're going to let the president write the laws, which can't be a policy.”
Once again, Yarmuth is Chairman of the House Budget Committee, so his words should carry some weight and get the attention of the media. And given that Yarmuth is also from Kentucky, his comments should shine a much needed light on the sycophancy of McConnell, at least I hope so. For too long, there has been no real voice from Kentucky to challenge McConnell and the other Republicans here.
It’s one of the reasons why McConnell repeatedly gives the middle finger to America. For now, McConnell is electorally safe. The state Democratic Party is moribund. The one up and comer in our ranks, Amy McGrath, did not take out Republican Congressman Andy Barr in 2018. The Republicans have a lock on this state, except for KY-3rd and two state wide offices — Attorney General and Secretary of State.
As long as McConnell feels safe, McConnell will continue to do whatever Trump wants because he wants to fill the judiciary with Republican hacks.
No, I am not advocating Yarmuth to run against McConnell. I’m advocating that Yarmuth keep talking to the media about how bad McConnell is though. Yarmuth has a position that affords him a little more media exposure, and I hope he continues to use it.
