Republicans have been walking back their deeply held principles for years in the wake of Donald Trump’s massive … boat parades.
All the same folks who once called me a traitor and an appeaser because of my strong opposition to the Iraq war are now suddenly against our “forever wars” and faithfully hew to Trump’s (very belated) assertion that Li’l Bush’s ill-conceived 17-year skirmish was a huge mistake. (Yeah, we know.)
Also, the deficit. It’s, well, not a big deal anymore. At least not for another 22 days.
And now David Perdue, one of the craven Trump-fluffing Georgia peaches currently running for U.S. Senate, is throwing out everything he ever believed in to stay in Trump’s good graces. And, of course, one of the things he now believes is that Georgians deserve a $2,000 relief check. Coincidentally, this is now also Trump’s (very belated) position.
But that’s not what you said in July! (One wonders how he’d react to this proposal if Joe Biden had floated it.)
PERDUE: “Well, I think, in sending people right now through payroll — payroll tax is one way to do. And I do support that, actually. I support that better than giving just a direct payment, like we did in the first round of CARES. I really oppose that, because we didn't see the impact back in '11 and '12, when that was done.”
Hmm, what could have possibly made Perdue change his mind? Did he peek his head out of Donald Trump’s rectum and see his shadow, auguring three more weeks of pretending to have core beliefs?
Man, I’d love to have control of Trump’s Twitter feed for five minutes. I bet you anything I could get Perdue to eat a bucket of earthworms.
UPDATE: Moscow Mitch has blocked consideration of the House bill calling for $2,000 payments. Did Mitch assure Perdue and Kelly Loeffler that they’d never have to actually vote on this?
