Friendly, reminder, we have a big special election on May 12th and voting is already getting started:
In-person voting kicked off Saturday, May 2 for the special election in California's 25th District to fill Katie Hill's seat. The district includes parts of northern LA County including Santa Clarita, Palmdale and Lancaster, as well as parts of Ventura County near Simi Valley.
The election is May 12.
Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan said great care will be taken to sanitize voting equipment after each use.
“The roster that people sign in on after each use, that will be wiped down,” Logan said. “The stylus that's used will be wiped down. Our employees will be wearing plastic gloves, face coverings. The ballot-marking device itself will be cleaned after each use and the whole environment will be cleaned on an hourly basis.”
Democrat Christy Smith is up against Republican Mike Garcia. Every registered voter has received a ballot in the mail. LA County officials say that so far based on returns mailed in, turnout is healthy.
Trump has endorsed Mike Garcia and Hillary Clinton has endorsed Christy Smith so this race is getting national attention and a lot of money. But if there’s one person who refuses to let this seat go to a Trumper it’s Katie Hill (D. CA-25) herself:
The former Democratic congresswoman from Southern California who resigned last year is running a digital and cable TV ad urging residents of her old district to vote in a May 12 special election to determine who will finish her term.
She opens the 30-second ad in a black mask with the White House in the background and delivers a dig at President Donald Trump, saying the coronavirus outbreak is “more dangerous because of what’s coming out of that building.”
She then pulls off the mask and says, “It’s me, Katie Hill.” She doesn’t mention the candidates for the 25th District seat — Democrat Christy Smith and Republican Mike Garcia — but warns voters that “when we take our vote for granted, we put ourselves and our communities in danger.”
“This time, we have to vote like out lives depend on it,” she says.
The ad was funded with $200,000 from Hill’s political action committee, HER Time. The ad is being targeted at voters who turned out in 2018 but did not have a consistent voting history, as well as newly registered voters and those who don’t typically receive a vote-by-mail ballot.
