Burns Strider and the “Bosslady”: The work continued after the campaign was over.

Sorry for being rather late on this one; I don’t write here much anymore.

The reaction was ever so predictable. After the New York Times’ report that Clinton shielded campaign adviser Burns Strider after he made inappropriate advances on another staffer, against the wishes of her campaign manager who wanted him fired, there was first outrage from some quarters on this site… followed immediately by apologism from others.  The latter focused around the fact that it was not the Clinton campaign itself who rehired Strider in 2016, but the campaign’s closely coordinated SuperPAC, Correct The Record.  The argument goes, “Hey, Clinton had nothing to do with him, it was all Brock’s doing”.

The fact that Clinton shielded Strider in 2008 is usually either swept under the rug, or receives a response akin to “fake news from the failing New York Times”.

The fact is, however, that Clinton’s work with Strider did not end with the campaign in 2008.  Rather, Strider continued to work closely with her up until taking up the Correct the Record position in 2013, where he switched to reporting to Brock instead. And even during the 2016 campaign season, the cooperation between the Clinton campaign and Strider continued.

How can we know this?  Because the Russians hacked the DNC and Podesta’s emails, of course.

The email hacks of course only represent a small fraction of emails — only those forwarded or CCed to those with compromised inboxes; neither Clinton’s personal inbox, nor Strider’s, were compromised, and so no emails sent directly between them can be known. However, hundreds of emails between them were forwarded to third parties (often with Clinton’s characteristic “Pls print” message), and these ended up in the hack.

Strider, for his part, makes no secret of who he answers to, frequently referring to Hillary as “The Boss” or “Bosslady”. Some examples:

Burns,

On the case where we represent the survivors and families for the embassy bombings, we just learned that the lobbyist
for Southern Sudan is negotiating with the state department on a deal that would destroy these victims of the ability to

collect money from Sudan. If you remember, last year after putting on a weeks worth of expert testimony the District
court in DC gave us a judgment finding that Sudan was directly responsible for supporting and helping the terrorist who

carried it out. We were hoping that the State dept would help us just like they required Libya to pay the victims of all of

its terrorist acts before they were granted “restored relations” in 08. I know that there may be more important national
interest involved but supporting the State Dept employees and their families who sacrificed so much should at least be
one of them. I'll be coming to DC next week but can come up anytime. John

Sojourners, as you know, has a great magazine.., has been one of that orgs stalwarts since the beginning and during the

most recent magazine awards programs it was the only faith-based magazine to receive top honors across the board,
receiving the “best of” several categories.., it's a good product… they have a nationwide subscribership of about

350,000… plus it has an online presence…

Several times a year Jim will conduct an interview with someone he feels is making a significant impact on the nation
and world… He has been deeply impacted by your personal focus on women and the impoverished and would like to
interview you for feature in one of the Sojourner upcoming additions… it would be all about your work and focus on

women and the impoverished.., a totally positive, enlightening and feel good piece… He recently interviewed Bono for
this feature slot…

I hope you are interested… I think it would be very smart considering attitudes out there in the progressive faith

community these days… Your witness on your work, with such a strong endorsement by Jim would be positive across the
board…

Let me know how to proceed if this is possible…

Dear Burns,

It was good to talk with you again this morning. I am grateful for your willingness to help the Council of Bishops. The

following are dates and times that are available:

Sunday, May 3, 6:00 PM dinner – This is the opening dinner for the Council in which all of the bishops will be present. It
will be at the American University Katzman Arts Center (right on the Nebraska Circle).

Wednesday, May 6, 6:00 PM dinner – Again all of the bishops will be present. This dinner will be at the Bethesda Hyatt,
7400 Wisconsin Avenue.

Another option is on Tuesday, May 6, any time between 2:00 and 4 PM with a group of bishops who are available to

come to the State Department.

Also a group of bishops are available for breakfast or lunch Tuesday through Thursday.

Our first hope is either the Sunday or Wednesday for dinner.

You or someone on behalf of Secretary Clinton can call me at If you could call or email me today to let me
know how the initial call went.

Keep the faith!

John and Burns, Great talking to you both this evening.

Burns, the United Methodist Bishops from around the world are coming to the Washington area for a weeklong

gathering of bishops. Bishop John is host and arranging their schedule. John can tell you more details …
it would be wonderful if a time could be found sometime during the week

(Sunday-Friday) for Hillary to meet with the entire group of bishops (around 100 total) or at least the leaders of the
African bishops (perhaps a group of 10 or so).

UNCLASSIFIED U.S. Department of State Case No. F-2014-20439 Doc No. C05758447 Date: 06/30/2015

John notes that the group can be flexible and accomodate Hillary's busy schedule. He suggests that there are a couple

of ideal evening opportunities where all the bishops will be present: this Sunday evening at 6 pm at American
University's Arts Center, or Wednesday at 6 pm at the Hyatt in Bethesda. There also is a Tuesday evening gathering and

reception with just the African bishops — 7 pm onwards at AP Shaw UMC in SE DC.

If it is not possible for her to go to the bishops, I wonder whether it might be possible for a smaller group (eg, John, the

African bishops and a couple others) to come to the State Department for a meeting in the Secretary's suite or
conference room on the 7th floor. The Secretary obviously has a very busy schedule, but it might well be possible to find

20-30 minutes sometime during the week at the Department. (I haven't yet done so, but I will check the State Dept

website and see what her announced travel schedule is.)

I am happy to help however I can, though it probably is easiest if you coordinate directly. Feel free to copy me at the
above emails if I can be helpful. Here are your cell numbers: Bishop John's is

Burns's is

God's blessings to you both,

David

Burns,

James Warren here.

I need your help. I'm trying to update my contact list . and I came to Secretary of State Clinton..

Who would give me the contact names to get to Mrs. Clinton, for Tony?

In the past, I had

Lauren Joloty    202-224-5723

Now with the change of location and jobs, I'm not sure who I should have, for Tony if he has me try to get a message to

her office.. I know this is a rare thing, but once in a while he would do that.

I'm just looking for a friendly name to talk to, to give me some (one of

two) names of people who if we called and said Tony Campolo . it would mean something and get the message to the

right person. to get to her. (Rare ocassion, remember that.)

Thanks,

Neera,

I saw you comment on my Saturday Facebook post. I want to thank you. Your
doing that means a lot to me.

I've spent my life silently and personally dealing with depression. It
wasn't something talked about in 1970's Mississippi; I learned that as a 7
year-old, the hard way, which resulted into how to hide it form others.
Doing so, Neera, had become so second nature to me that it was just part of
life.

The usual brief (but often) spells (I called them 'dark waves' when I was
a kid) turned into a longterm, deep one about a year ago… Honestly, I
became mainly distressed discovering how I have treated others with
seemingly little ability to control it. I had no idea this was
manifestation of depression. This and just deep melancholy led me to find
some help. And, it has been quite the road to discovery.

During all of this I have found myself so compelled to talk about it, be
honest and share my experience. There remains a stigma out there. And,
that's the last thing folks need.

I really appreciate you…. I have since I used to walk you (and baby) to
the parking lot under the overpass near the DCCC… 🙂 Love you, B.

But I digress.

After switching to Correct The Record, Strider shouldn’t have been coordinating with the Clinton Campaign at all.  Certainly, communications did reduce at that point — but they did not go away. As we all know, the Clinton Campaign was coordinating strategy with Correct the Record, and this extended to Strider as well:

Thanks so much Tom… and, FYI:
the conservative Trib in Pittsburgh thinks SC & the South is Hillary country (tomorrow's paper):

On Feb 26, 2016, at 10:14 PM, Tom Hendrickson wrote:

Hans, Marlon & David,
I wanted to share my suggestions for nailing down a 2 ½ week NC primary strategy and staff allocation framework. The background to this is the allocation of 70 delegates by Congressional District (and another 37 statewide delegates). The 70 District delegates will be apportioned between Dem candidates based on the percentage of votes received within each respective Congressional District using the maps for the 113th/114th Congress as attached. The Statewide delegates will be apportioned based on the statewide totals.

As you see at the bottom of this email, the districts breakdown as follows:
8 Delegates: Districts 1, 4 & 12
6 Delegates: District 13
5 Delegates: Districts 5, 6, 9 & 10
4 Delegates: Districts 2, 3, 7, 8 & 11

This memo is predicated on very favorable outcome in SC, a belief that our polling will point to an increasingly favorable outcome in the March states prior to March 15th, and recognizes that our strategy will be impacted by the overall sentiment of the voters as we approach the 15th. That sentiment has been moving in Hillary’s favor, so let’s keep it that way!!

Within that framework, I think that Bernie will likely outperform his average around Asheville (10th), Boone (5th) and Chapel Hill (4th) and the university communities. We will want to push our performance in the 1st, 4th &12th due to the extra delegates (24) and need to watch our performance in the 10th & 5th.

We should be good in the 4th, but we have a lot of universities here, so we need to watch our canvass data for any warning signs. We also need to watch our canvass data with white voters in suburban communities around Charlotte (Primarily 9th, secondarily the 8th & 10th) and Raleigh (4th, 2nd and 13th) to see if Bernie is gaining any traction there.

I would divide and assign some specific staff members to be responsible to organize if needed, harness, monitor and manage our operations with the lay leaders in the following groups:
1. Teachers/NCAE (Linda Gunter, amongst others)
2. Unions (Rob Black)
3. RWCA (Endorsed, but need to GOTV)
4. Durham Committee(Endorsed, but need to GOTV)
5. Charlotte BPC (Working on the endorsement, should know Sunday night, 2/28)
6. Other Caucuses/Committees (Simpkins PAC, Rev Cordis Brown Cmte in G’boro, Eastern NC Civic Group, etc
7. State Employees (potentially, but problematic. Hans, let’s discuss offline. They are backing Dan Blue III’s opponent for State Treasurer)
8. LGBT Outreach – We are connected at many levels. Does it need more coordination to generate GOTV help?
9. Students – Who is leading our college outreach? TARGETED early voting with them?
10. Latino/Hispanic Outreach (Loop in Matty Chatterton)
11. County Party Organizations; Dem Women; YDs; Dem Men – Flood with speakers in the next 2 weeks
12. Religious leaders, preachers (Loop in Burns Strider, Eric Sapp, Ken Eudy)
13. Early Voting Process – We need someone living, breathing and eating early voting. Need to monitor/analyze vote count updates for EV & absentee and manage and be accountable for our early vote GOTV process. Let’s discuss budget. It’s where we will win the primary!

I will personally reach out to assess and develop a current Cherokee (11th) and Lumbee (8th & some 7th) status & strategy and will circle back to this group.

I would like to discuss ideas for the following potential message/press events:
1. Early voting/message hits with Governors Hunt (education) & Perdue (Seniors/Medicare)
2. Rural hit that couples new industry with community colleges
3. Junior Johnson (that’s NASCAR Legend Junior Johnson for those who don’t know!!) event in the central piedmont
4. Veteran’s event around Fayetteville & Jacksonville tapping our military supporters
5. Rural/farm; solar energy; agritourism or environmental event (Blue Ridge Parkway infrastructure/conservation easement/Coastal climate change)
6. Working mom/child/family event around Huntersville
7. HBCU event at NC Central/ NC A&T/WSSU; surrogate to ECSU & Pembroke
8. Faith outreach into AA and white churches; Ministers’ endorsement?

Staffing:
1. We are currently have 3 offices:
a. Raleigh: HQ and press operations, along with organizers for the Triangle area field operations
b. Greensboro: Triad field operations
c. Charlotte: Charlotte area field operations
2. My thoughts for 6 additional field operations are as follows:

The simple facts are that when a well-documented case of sexual harassment was presented to Clinton, along with recommendations from her campaign manager to fire the harasser, Clinton sided with the harasser — only docking his pay, and then moving the victim, not the harasser, to different work.  However, the story does not stop there: as can be seen in the leaked emails, she continued to work extensively with him over the subsequent years. Not simply a one-sided relationship, but an active back-and-forth between Clinton and Strider (one of the most noteworthy things of the Podesta emails as a whole is how few people Clinton actually ever spoke directly with compared to how many emails she received from others; she tended to keep a very tight inner circle, and kept all emails she wrote short).

And it was during this time in Clinton’s circle that Strider continued his behavior of inappropriate advances toward women at work.

Not only was the adviser, Burns Strider, not pushed out — he thrived after her campaign, landing a senior role at a super PAC preparing for her next presidential bid. In that job, he exhibited the same kinds of inappropriate behavior toward women who worked there, particularly two young female subordinates, they said.

In at least three separate instances between 2007 and 2015, women who worked for the Clinton campaign or the pro-Clinton PAC said that Strider, 52, harassed them at work.

All along, even after his departure from that super PAC, he was described in the press as a close friend and confidant to Clinton, someone with access to one of the most important people in the country. In meetings, he would refer to the “boss lady” and what she wanted done — a sign to people in the extended Clinton orbit that he wielded influence, especially in the eyes of the young staffers who hoped to work for the first woman president.

This story is based on documents obtained from the 2008 campaign, months of emails and text messages, and more than two dozen interviews over the course of the last month, including with six people who worked for Strider at Correct the Record.

This is not a time for apologism. This is a time to recognize a highly flawed judgement, and for all parties (both those involved in the decision-making process, and the general public) to learn from this to ensure that it does not happen again.
