Biden to Acquire 200 Million Additional Vaccine Doses
The Washington Post is reporting that the Biden Administration is acquiring an additional 200 million vaccine doses bringing the total to 600 million, enough to vaccine 300 million. This was an option in the origin contracts with Pfizer and Moderna but, by itself, won’t immediately increase supplies though it should secure them for later in the year.
www.msn.com/…Moderna has already promised to supply the federal government with 100 million doses by the end of March and another 100 million by the end of June. Pfizer has indicated it can provide 120 million doses by the end of March and another 80 million by the end of May, two months earlier than its initial July target.

Covid-19 vaccines could be authorized for young children by September, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told ProPublica.
“I would think by the time we get to school opening, we likely will be able to get people who come into the first grade,” Fauci said.
Pfizer and Moderna, the two companies currently with authorized Covid-19 vaccines in the US, have both begun trials for children, but started with older age groups.
Pfizer’s trial in children ages 12-15 is fully enrolled with 2,259 participants, and the company says it hopes to have results “in the early part of 2021 and from there, we will plan to finalize our study in 5-11 year olds.”

So far, about 10% — almost 33.8 million Americans — have received at least one dose of the two-part vaccines, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. www.msn.com/…Across all regions, the (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine was 85 percent effective in preventing severe COVID-19, according to Johnson & Johnson’s press release. In fact, the company noted that its vaccine showed “complete protection against COVID-related hospitalization and death” 28 days after vaccination, “with no reported cases” of COVID-related hospitalization or death among those who’d received Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine.

More than 151 million people have been vaccinated worldwide, about 2% of the world’s population. Leading is Israel with 41.5% of its population receiving at least one dose. The UK has about 19.6% vaccinated and the US has 10.2%. Many nations have had minimal vaccinations. Until most of the world is vaccinated, there is a great risk of new variations of the virus mutating and making vaccines useless.
