Alabama GOP Senate candidate Tommy Tuberville is fundraising and holding face-to-face meetings in Washington this week, defying orders from the city that visitors from certain coronavirus hot spots quarantine upon arrival.Tuberville spent at least some of his time in D.C. at the Trump International Hotel, according to a photo posted to Facebook by Arkansas GOP Rep. Bruce Westerman showing the two men in the hotel lobby on Tuesday night. In the photo, neither man is wearing a mask.Alabama is among the states identified by D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) as a coronavirus hot spot, and any “nonessential” visitors from there are expected to self-quarantine for 14 days. Alabama’s coronavirus cases are surging, with more than 25 percent of its total cases appearing in the past two weeks, according to state data.
Alexandra Kendrick, president of High Cotton Consulting, a D.C- based fundraising operation, also offered in-person meetings with Tuberville while he was in D.C. from early afternoon Tuesday through Thursday, the Post reported. She reportedly emailed contacts shortly after Tuberville’s win earlier this month, when he defeated former Trump administration Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a GOP runoff.
“We are accepting in-person meetings during that time frame. Let me know if you and your group are interested in sitting down with the NEXT Senator from Alabama. Just let me know and we will put you on the schedule,” Kendrick wrote, the Post reported, citing a copy of the email.
Tuberville didn’t get into that specifically but said the criticism is not something that he worries about.
“I’m used to it,” Tuberville said. “I dealt with that type of media my whole life. That’s the reason people look at me and say, ’That doesn’t bother you?’ No, it doesn’t bother me at all.
“I’ve been called everything in the world in some of the better stadiums by some of the greatest people on earth because they are passionate about their football team.”
I understand that U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D. AL) has a very tough re-election race ahead of him but he hasn’t been wasting time hitting Tuberville for being a clueless idiot about this pandemic:
In an interview with Huntsville radio WVNN’s “The Jeff Poor Show,” Jones argued his opponent did not “have a clue” how to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.
He pointed to responding to the rise in coronavirus casualties as a focus of his campaign.
“We feel very good about where we are in this,” Jones said. “We know what I’ve been doing is trying to save lives and save livelihoods. You know, I’m out here every day trying to work for the people of Alabama. I’m trying to make sure we do the things necessary in these next packages. We’re still in trouble in Alabama. I’ve got an opponent who has indicated he doesn’t have a clue how to handle it. He was on your show with another guest back in May basically saying we don’t need any more stimulus. We need to get back to work. Well, we really needed it then and we need it now. And by the way, we’ve tripled the number of cases in Alabama since that time. We’ve tripled the number of deaths. In America, we hit over the 4.4 million mark today with 150,000 deaths. We’re not out of the woods with this and we need leadership, and that’s what I think this is going to boil down to — leadership, leadership in a crisis and leadership for the people of Alabama on the issues, the kitchen table issues that folks are concerned about every day of the week.”
