Act Now! Impeachment Investigations Will Protect Our Constitutional Democracy

Last Friday, we launched a poll asking PDA supporters across the country: “Do you think that the Progressive Democrats of America should call for the Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives to commence with Impeachment Investigations for President Trump?” The poll, which determined PDA’s official position on the question, ran through Monday, and closed at midnight Pacific Time.
The results were overwhelming: 84% voted “yes” versus 16% for “no.” While we did receive feedback from a few people who oppose impeachment investigations, the vast majority of comments were along the lines of “Do you even have to ask? As PDA’s Executive Director, I didn’t weigh in on the matter before the vote by our base. Here are my thoughts about the outcome of this binding poll:
I’m heartened by the results. I strongly support impeachment hearings myself. While I understand many Presidents have been corrupt, and also that our justice system is far from balanced, Trump’s overt flouting of the law establishes a precedent that truly undermines this constitutional republic. Since the days of George Washington, one thing has been understood by everyone about America, we do not have a king—our chief executive is not above the law.
Not pursuing impeachment strikes me as tolerating the erosion of our system of checks and balances; and sets a terrible precedent that future Presidents could readily exploit. In an era when strong man rulers are subverting democratic norms around the world, we must not tolerate that here.
