70% of US Seniors and 33% of All Adults Now Vaccinated
The US has vaccinated 70.3% of residents over the age of 65 with at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine as of yesterday. The Center for Disease Control also has reports that show 33% of American adults and 25.7% of all Americans have been vaccinated with at least one shot.
Vaccines already delivered or scheduled to be delivered by next week should take us to about 200 million doses overall made available between December 14 and March 3, 2021.
27 Million Vaccine Doses to be Shipped Next Week
The White House said 27 million doses of coronavirus vaccines will be distributed next week, more than three times the number when President Joe Biden took office just over two months ago.
Coronavirus coordinator Jeff Zients informed governors on their weekly conference call that 23 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna and about 4 million of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine will be shipped next week…
The administration expects supplies to continue to increase in the coming weeks, which comes as more states are relaxing eligibility criteria for shots. Biden is directing all adults be eligible for vaccines nationwide by May 1, and the U.S. remains on track to have enough supply to cover all adults by the end of May.
AstraZeneca has suffered another setback from some US regulators who criticized the company’s claim that its US trial showed 79% efficacy; some of the numbers are apparently from old trials. The vaccine may still get FDA approval in May and it is one of the most widely used outside the US. It is so unfortunate that the company keeps making these blunders causing considerable skepticism. Otherwise it seems a safe an effective vaccine the world desperately needs.
Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine is getting a major boost in production though it may not have the 20 million doses to deliver to the US by the end of March as it had planned. The CDC reports J&J as having delivered only 4.7 million doses as of yesterday.
Johnson & Johnson’s (NYSE: JNJ) COVID-19 vaccine is expected to get a significant supply boost after manufacturing partner Catalent Inc (NYSE: CTLT) secured a key U.S. regulator clearance, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.
What Happened: A U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s emergency-use clearance received Tuesday will allow Catalent's facility in Bloomington, Indiana, to manufacture and ship millions of doses helping boost the vaccination supply.
