CNN’s Latest Poll says that 51% of Americans want the Senate to remove Donald Trump from office while 45% are opposed.

Nearly seven in 10 (69%) say that upcoming trial should feature testimony from new witnesses who did not testify in the House impeachment inquiry. And as Democrats in the Senate seek to persuade at least four Republican senators to join them on votes over allowing witnesses in the trial, the Republican rank and file are divided on the question: 48% say they want new witnesses, while 44% say they do not.

Most Americans think Trump is guilty of the charges. Some 58% say he abused his power and 57% say he obstructed justice. While this may not convince any Republicans to vote to convict Trump, these are not great numbers for Trump’s re-election or for the Republicans in Congress who seem eager to give him a blank check.

The poll has 54% disapproving of congressional Republican’s handling of impeachment compared to 39% who approve. Likewise, 50% disapprove of the way Democrats in Congress are dealing with impeachment compared to 46% who approve.

Fewer now think that impeachment will help Trump’s re-election. In December, 32% of Americans thought impeachment was good for Trump now only 28% think so. Last month 54% of Republicans thought it was a positive, a number that has dropped to 45% in this poll. The Republicans who say it does not matter has increased from 32% to 45%.

The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS January 16 through 19 among a random national sample of 1,156 adults reached on landlines or cellphones by a live interviewer. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
