Here’s the latest news out of Kansas:
Former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) is 10 points behind Democrat Barry Grissom in a head-to-head contest for the state's Senate race, according to internal GOP polling data obtained by The Wall Street Journal.
The survey found that Grissom led Kobach 52 percent to 42 percent, while every other Republican tested in a head-to-head matchup had at least an 8-point lead over the Democrat.
The poll also showed a generic Republican beating a generic Democrat by a 44-36 margin.
Republicans have offered public worries about the possibility that Kobach could win a Republican primary and be the party's nominee in the Senate race. Kobach was the GOP candidate for governor last year and lost to Democrat Laura Kelly.
The poll, which was conducted June 9-11 for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, found Kobach's favorability rating underwater, with 32 percent of respondents viewing him favorably and 50 percent unfavorably. It surveyed 600 likely voters in Kansas, including 150 likely Republican primary voters, and has a margin of error of 4 percent.
It’s clear Moscow Mitch doesn’t want Kobach in this race because he threatens his majority. But Kobach ain’t leaving and Barry Grissom is using this poll to keep building momentum for his campaign:
The biggest news yet in the race to represent Kansas in the U.S. Senate just broke: a leaked poll from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the GOP’s Senate campaign arm, shows that in a direct general election match-up Barry is beating Kris Kobach 52% to 42%.
We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to flip Kansas blue, and this poll demonstrates without a doubt that Barry is the best candidate to do it. But it also means that Kobach will know he needs to pick up the pace, so we can’t afford to take our foot off the gas. Pitch in whatever you can to Team Grissom right now to help us keep up the momentum »
The first public poll in this race tells us two things:
1. Just like we’ve been saying, Kansas is finally in play in 2020.
2. Barry is the strongest Democratic candidate to run for U.S. Senate in Kansas.
Team Grissom is proud of the hard work that Barry has done to position himself as the leading candidate in the race for U.S. Senate — and the generous support we’ve received from folks across the state — but we also know that we have a long road ahead of us. Kobach and the Republicans in Washington are certainly going to be scared after this poll — and they should be. But we can’t afford to slow down to let them catch up, not even for a minute.
